What is HSK?

HSK or Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (汉语水平考试) is the standardized test of Mandarin Chinese proficiency for non-native speakers administered by the People's Republic of China. HSK certification is often required to attend a university or to work at a business in mainland China.

Because HSK is the official leveling system of Chinese language proficiency it is a valuable benchmark to track learning progress even if you do not plan on getting the actual certification. Many online courses and language learning tools are based around the HSK vocabulary set.

Why use HSK Flashcards?

HSK Flashcards is meant to be a supplemental study tool. If you are taking a course to learn Chinese based on the HSK standard, HSK Flashcards will help you memorize the official HSK vocabulary lists you need to know.

I built HSK Flashcards as a personal project during my own studies after finding other flashcard apps to be lacking. A few key features that set it apart are...

How does it work?

Studying for your test with HSK Flashcards is easy. Simply open the app, select your vocabulary level, and then tap the "Study" button.

You will then be given a deck of flashcards. Each card has three sides, one with Hanzi, one with pinyin, and one with an English translation. Tap the card to flip from side to side. Take note that the card will flip in opposite directions if tapped on the left side or the right side. When on the pinyin side, tap the speaker symbol to listen the word's pronunciation.

Swipe right (or tap the check icon) if you remembered the pronunciation and definition of the word. Swipe left (or tap the x icon) if you forgot.

What are grades?

After swiping through all cards in a deck, the a percentage grade of words you remembered will be calculated. You can track your progress by comparing your grades.

What are bookmarks?

Tapping the bookmark icon on the top left of a card will add that vocabulary word to a special deck that can be swiped on by tapping the "Review Bookmarks" button. If you find yourself frequently forgetting the same words, try bookmarking it so that you can quickly focus on the words that are most in need of improvement.
